Bible Probe. We keep the Sabbath? (sabbath)

posted by Lorenzo(R), 12.05.2009

No, Christians observe the Lord's Day, which is Sunday. To observe the Sabbath is to follow all of the precepts set out by Moses in the Law. You would have to be circumsized, of course, and if you worked on the Sabbath, you would be put to death:

from Exodus 35:1-3

Moses assembled the whole Israelite community and said to them, "This is what the LORD has commanded to be done.
2
On six days work may be done, but the seventh day shall be sacred to you as the sabbath of complete rest to the LORD. Anyone who does work on that day shall be put to death.
3
You shall not even light a fire in any of your dwellings on the sabbath day."

also from Numbers 28:9-10

"On the sabbath day you shall offer two unblemished yearling lambs, with their cereal offering, two tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil, and with their libations.
10
Each sabbath there shall be the sabbath holocaust in addition to the established holocaust and its libation.

However, if you read all of Matthew chapters 5-7, Christ is setting forth His teachings on the commandments, and never once does He mention observing the Sabbath according to the precepts of the Mosaic Law. What else does Jesus command His disciples to do?

Matthew 26:26-29

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, "Take and eat; this is my body."
27
Then he took a cup, gave thanks, 16 and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you,
28
for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins.
29
17 I tell you, from now on I shall not drink this fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father."

and also in Luke 22:17-20

He said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover 5 with you before I suffer,
16
for, I tell you, I shall not eat it (again) until there is fulfillment in the kingdom of God."
17
Then he took a cup, 6 gave thanks, and said, "Take this and share it among yourselves;
18
for I tell you (that) from this time on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
19
7 Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me."
20
And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you.

He commands His disciples to observe the Passover in a new way, because He is the fulfilment of the Pasqual sacrifice. He is the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world." If people are sick or suffering, it is because they do not partake of the Lamb's Supper, or perhaps they ignore what Paul said to the Corinthians:

1Cor 11:23-30:

For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread,
24
and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
25
In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."
26
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.
27
Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord. 12
28
A person should examine himself, 13 and so eat the bread and drink the cup.
29
For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment 14 on himself.
30
That is why many among you are ill and infirm, and a considerable number are dying.
