cross controversy (general)

posted by fezik82(R), Ohio, 11.06.2009

I believe that you are correct in believing that "stauros" could also mean upright pole, or stake. The stake was a means of impalement in some cultures, but it is not historically accurate to believe that this is the way that Christ died. Had His hands been above His head, doctors confess that He would have suffered asphyxiation in under 4 minutes. With the arms extended, many were hoisted between the legs to prolong agony... approximately to 3 hours. Christ suffered for 3 hours on the cross.

The nail used was like a railroad tie. There was one nail per hand, yet Thomas states that He will not believe that it was Christ that the other disciples saw unless he sees the holes in His hands from the "nails" (John 20:25).
John 21:18,19... Peters arms were stretched out. He died on a cross.
Matthew 27:37... the sign was above His head, not His hands.

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
~~Matthew 22:37
