Drinking more coffee leads to a longer life, two studies say (Health)

I gather these mean black coffee, without cream and/or sugar -- which just add needless calories & weight hat likely eliminate any coffee benefits.

...Coffee has long been known for its antioxidant benefits. There are zero calories in a cup of black coffee as far as I know. Some milk, sugar loaded coffees may contain 500 calories or more."Most people I know have been able to kick the habit of adding cream and/or sugar to coffee - within 3 days. ALSO, ALWAYS use a paper filter. There are small amounts of cancer causing chemicals in regular black coffee beans. The paper filter filters these out. So, do NOT skip the paper filter and opt for a metal basket filter. BIG mistake over the long term. /s/ Steve

Drinking more coffee leads to a longer life, two studies say

(CNN)Greater consumption of coffee could lead to a longer life, according to two new studies published Monday.

The findings have resurfaced the centuries-old conversation on coffee's health effects.

One study surveyed more than 520,000 people in 10 European countries, making it the largest study to date on coffee and mortality, and found that drinking more coffee could significantly lower a person's risk of mortality.
The second study was more novel, as it focused on nonwhite populations. After surveying over 185,000 African-Americans, Native Americans, Hawaiians, Japanese-Americans, Latinos and whites, the researchers found that coffee increases longevity across various races.

People who drank two to four cups a day had an 18% lower risk of death compared with people who did not drink coffee, according to the study. These findings are consistent with previous studies that had looked at majority white populations, said Veronica Wendy Setiawan, associate professor of preventative medicine at USC's Keck School of Medicine, who led the study on nonwhite populations.

The evidence is fairly strong for coffee preventing type II diabetes and Parkinson's, and reasonably good for antidepressant effects, too, doctors say.

The bad stuff
Coffee hasn't always been hailed as such a great thing. It's also not for everyone.

Doctors may never consider coffee a standard recommendation because of individuals' varying susceptibility to side effects, said Hensrud.
Those include headaches, insomnia, heartburn and palpitations, not to mention urinary urgency. People who get fast heartbeats may need to steer clear of caffeinated coffee, too. Others don't drink coffee because it irritates their stomachs.
