SDA's you are wrong! Saturday Sabbath & 10 Commandments are for Jews (Gospel of Jesus)

posted by fezik82(R), Ohio, 12.30.2014

Steve, I'm not sure that I'm getting my point out just right because it seems like I'm being misunderstood. I don't believe that every Jewish law must be followed.. most of them aren't exactly biblical. You said that "turning on a light bulb could be considered work", and while that's true, it is not the Law of Moses. That's strictly a Jewish law, human commands and teachings... there is only one Lawgiver (James 4:12). I don't for a second claim that we are to uphold the laws that the Jews created, those are the legalities that Jesus opposed. I offered a number of verses in my last post which are clearly referencing the old law, but Christ and His apostles say that that whole law can be summed up in the command to love. That is what I believe... that we fulfill the law through love. Exodus 31:18 says that the Commandments were the law of the Covenant, of course that is the Old Covenant... but it is also these same commandments that Paul said we need to heed in Romans 13. So I guess that I don't know how to explain it... I believe that we are freed from the bondage of the law because we are not tied down by the wrath and penalties, but at the same time we are told that we are to let our love drive us in all we do and that love is the fulfillment of the Old Testament law. That's why it seems to me that we are to obey the Law. I don't know what exactly to make of it, really... but I can't see that we are expected to abandon the law.

You pointed out that the Law of Moses is tough, that if you mess up once you're deserving of damnation.. but I recognize Christ's sacrifice and know that Christ suffered the penalty for our transgressions. That sacrifice was just as much for me as it was for those before Christ... because I have also transgressed the law. Sin demands punishment only where there is law :

Romans 5:13 For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

But Christ died for my sins. I am nothing without that sacrifice, I am dead without Christ. Messing up doesn't demand damnation anymore because Christ suffered our punishment. If I had no law, I have not transgressed and I don't need a Savior... but I have disobeyed and I do need a Savior. While I believe that we are to obey the Law and the commandments.. I believe that in some areas we do it in a different way, not in the shadows... but all Israel had were the shadows.

As I stated in my last post, in Colossians 2, the context really seems to suggest that what was nailed to the cross was the punishment that came from disobeying the law. Verses 13-23 in particular, but even just in verse 14 in the KJV, it says:

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

What was against us? Certainly not the law.. the law was for us. The ordinances that were against us were the punishments... our debt was nailed to the Cross.

I don't feel that Jesus made a point against legalities by doing the work of God on the Sabbath... I believe that what He did on the Sabbath, He did simply because He was God. When He healed on the Sabbath, His response to the Jews who opposed Him was that His Father works on the Sabbath and so does He... but if this were some sort of ploy to make a point against legalities, God never made a law against healing on the Sabbath, that was the Jews supposition. Again, those were the legalities that Jesus opposed... the man made laws.

You said:
This isn't that tough of a subject when you first realize that Jesus was sent (His main focus) to save the Lost Sheep of Israel. Over the course of time, the Children of Israel had grown hardened and indifferent to the things of God.

That is what I was hoping to get across from my post.. I agree with you. What had hardened in the children of Israel were their hearts... they could not obey God because they didn't have enough love. Like Paul said, the commands to not steal, not covet, not murder and so on are summed up in the command to love your neighbor as yourself.. because love does no harm to anyone (Romans 13:8-10). If you really love, you will not worship other gods, take God's Name in vain, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness... love could never allow any of these to happen. But as you pointed out, the children of Israel had grown hardened.. they did not have the love that was required to keep the law. That's why God gave His own love and put it right into our hearts (Romans 5:5)

I don't feel that what Jesus said to the Jews was just for the Jews, it wasn't a spur of the moment decision for God to join the nations to Israel, He knew all along that this was His plan (Ezekiel 37:21-22), He was going to make us all one. Jesus said in John 10:16 that He had other sheep that were of a different flock and He would bring them together and make one flock. One shepherd, one flock.. all with the same rules:

I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. There will be one king over all of them and they will never again be two nations or be divided into two kingdoms... My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd. They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees. (Ezekiel 37:22, 24)

According to Mark 2:23-28, the Jews are wrong in what they call unlawful work on the Sabbath. Sabbath was made for man, to give man rest... now we find rest in Christ.

I asked The Lord how much He loved me

He stretched out His arms and said, "this much"

Then He died for me
