Angela: my reply (video-photo)

I was hoping by posting this rather well done movie that it would generate some discussion.

'Sola Scriptura' is a Protestant thing. Even though Scripture itself (Paul) says that in addition to Scripture we MUST adhere to Apostolic tradition. I too am against Sola Scriptura. I would replace it with what Scripture tells us - something like 'Scriptura & Apostolic Tradition'. Those things passed on to the Church by the Apostles of Jesus. Both are equally important.

Regarding Martin Luther, he was right when he railed against Indulgences (to build St Peter's Basilica) and keeping Scripture from being translated into their local languages. The Catholic Church felt that even many priests couldn't interpret Scripture correctly - so to hand it to the faithful/masses would be inviting disaster.

Forget the thousands of 'splinter' denominations interpreting Scripture in a way that meets their fancy. If you look at just the Seventh Day Adventists (SDA's) you can see that they still can't interpret Scripture correctly. Though Scripture tells us to follow Apostolic Tradition in addition to Scripture, the SDA's conveniently call Apostolic Tradition - traditions of man so they can bypass the truths passed on to us by the Apostles - which happens to call many of their dogmas into question. The Jehovah Witnesses & Mormons are the same way. They took it a step further and created their own 'Bibles' - which fits neatly with their heretical dogmas.

The fact is, Martin Luther just happened to be unlucky enough to live in a period when the Catholic Church was not practicing its best behavior. The Inquisition was going on, and Luther was branded a heretic and hunted for his righteous beliefs. The times made it impossible for Luther to remain in the Catholic Church and try to reform it. He tried to reform it, but he had to get out - or be killed.

One cannot ignore the fact that there have been scores of very bad popes in history! Many were politically appointed. But then again - Jesus never told us that his church would never have bad leaders. He only said that it would make it to the end.

Since 1898, there have been many saintly popes like John Paul II. Pope Francis looks to be 'saintly' but he also looks to be a befuddled liberal. His recent remarks about acceptance of Homosexuality) and 'playing down' abortion is clear defiance of Scripture - and is bound to cause another split in the Catholic Church.

My view, being half Catholic & half Protestant (= Non-denominational) is that both Catholics and Protestants are half right. AND we will ALL make it to the end.

Seventh Day Adventists (SDA):

EXAMPLE OF WHY THE CATHOLIC CHURCH FEARED LETTING PEOPLE HAVE SCRIPTURE IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE - They feared something like this WRONG interpretation of Scripture would happen:

The SDA Church is rooted in the Millerite Movement that swept the United States in the 1840's. WIlliam Miller (1782 - 1849) was a New England Baptist preacher who developed a unique interpretation of Daniel 8:14.

In the King James Version that passage reads: "And he [a saint] said unto me, 'Unto 2,300 days, then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.' " This is a prophecy about the desecration of the Temple by Antiochus Epiphanes, but Miller applied it to the end times converting the days to years. Assuming the prophecy was given in 457 BC, he calculated that Jesus would return 2,300 years later, sometime between March 21, 1843 and March 21, 1844. Incredibly, he interpreted the "cleansing of the sanctuary" to refer to the purging of the earth by fire at the Second Coming of Jesus!

When March 21, 1944 came and passed, Miller recalculated the date for October 22, 1844. When nothing happened on that day, Miller's followers became totally disillusioned. The whole experience was dubbed "The Great Disappointment." Miller died in disgrace four years later.

Also, a great many of Miller's followers ruined themselves financially. Many believed in Miller's interpretation so much that they sold their worldly possessions, including their homes.

Also, look what rose from wrong interpretation of Scripture. We only need to point to 3 cults - the SDA's, Mormon and Jehovah Witness cults. There are also countless more. A cult will always have some outside rule book in addition to but usually at odds with Scripture. SDA's rely on Ellen White's teachings; Christian Scientists - Mary Baker Eddy; Mormons - Joseph Smith's and the Book of Mormon; Jehovah Witnesses - their own Bible; and of course Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard, Jr's nonsense.
