I believe that you are correct in believing that "stauros" could also mean upright pole, or stake. The stake was a means of impalement in some cultures, but it is not historically accurate to believe that this is the way that Christ died. Had His hands been above His head, doctors confess that He would have suffered asphyxiation in under 4 minutes. With the arms extended, many were hoisted between the legs to prolong agony... approximately to 3 hours. Christ suffered for 3 hours on the cross. --- |
