Next apocalypse? Mayan year 2012 stirs doomsayers (unexplained)

By Mark Stevenson, Associated Press Writer
MEXICO CITY — Apolinario Chile Pixtun is tired of being bombarded with frantic questions about the Mayan calendar supposedly "running out" on Dec. 21, 2012. After all, it's not the end of the world.
Or is it?

Definitely not, the Mayan Indian elder insists. "I came back from England last year and, man, they had me fed up with this stuff."

It can only get worse for him. Next month Hollywood's "2012" opens in cinemas, featuring earthquakes, meteor showers and a tsunami dumping an aircraft carrier on the White House.

At Cornell University, Ann Martin, who runs the "Curious? Ask an Astronomer" website, says people are scared.

Next apocalypse? Mayan year 2012 stirs doomsayers

I will try and find a website I was reading last week that addressed this . What I do remember is that the calendar and its cycles are not definite, there are different ways of interpreting the length of the calendar, one ends in 2012, a number of others have different dates, some past, some still to come. also the calendar in no way predicts the end of the world, it just the point at which the calendar stops its cycle.
This is not the website I was looking for, but it has some of the same ideas, especially the one that discusses the cycles of 13 and 20

Next apocalypse? Mayan year 2012 stirs doomsayers

We're all probably going to wake up December 22, 2012, just like we did on January 1, 2000, and all those other days after the JWs "said" the world was going to end.

We're warned about divination in scripture, and it's a practice that we should avoid. We're told in scripture that we know "neither the day, nor the hour" when the Lord again will come. We're only told to be ready:

"Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, 'Peace and safety,' destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief."
- 1 Thessalonians 5:1-5

"The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers." - Luke 12:46

"Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains." - James 5:7

"So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." - Matthew 24:44

Instead of worrying about when the rapture will occur, Christians should follow Peter’s instruction to repent of their sins, live lives of holiness and godliness, be zealous and at peace, and wait for the Lord’s coming with forbearance and joy:

"But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him."
- 2 Peter 3:8-15
